Photos – 31st European Championship

On December 6-8, we held the 31st European Championship in Prague, Czech Republic, along with an Intercontinental cup. This was the new Era ITKF’s first event; it was inspiring, and everyone could feel the positive energy in the air, the excitement and the anticipation of a bright future. On the Championship participated 185 athletes from 14 countries (Armenia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Ukraine, United Kingdom).

The judging refreshment course preceding the competition was unique. There was plenty discussion which showed me that people are thinking and learning and that karate is still evolving.

The competition was on a very high technical level, the judging was good and fair, and all the judges followed a unified standard. This is a big achievement as such was uncommon in past ITKF tournaments. There was great friendship and sportsmanship on display between the athletes, judges, officials, and even observers.

“This is the kind of competition that Sensei Nishiyama and Aiko San spoke to me of and wished for — a showcase of Budo Karate.” Avi Rokah sensei

At ITKF we welcome all traditional karate styles, not only Shotokan or Nishiyama style. What we adhere to is not one style or another, but universal budo principles. These are like an axiom and true to all martial arts, regardless of the difference in technique or external form. They were discovered and passed down through many generations. They are mental and physical principles that allow us to be most effective in movement and combat; they apply to all areas of life.

The success of the European Championship is a great sign for our future, a sign that everyone is together in one train of thought, seeking unlimited development through Budo Karate, not just as technicians but also as human beings. Let us keep this energy and excitement; we are doing our best in every moment to be the best karate people we can be. Now lets do our best to enable many thousands of people to enjoy growth and development through Budo karate principles.

ITKF Judges´ Refresher Course conducted by W. Kwiecinski sensei, R. Fusaro sensei and A. Rokah sensei.

The 5th anniversary of Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama’s passing

The 5th anniversary of Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama’s passing.

Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama was a founder and first President of the International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF). He passed away on 7 November 2008. He was a leading human and the charismatic leader of world traditional karate.

Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama was born in 1928 in Tokyo. He began his karate training in 1943 under Gichin Funakoshi, founder of modern Shotokan karate and later he continued his training at Takaushoku University.

Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama was a founder and first President of the ITKF. His first objective was to have Traditional Karate as part of the Olympic Family. He is the creator of new categories of Traditional Karate competition (fuku-go – contest in which each competitor takes part in two events, a synthesis of kata and kumite in one event and en-bu choreographically directed kumite).

He is the author of many works about Traditional Karate, his best known being – “Karate, the Art of Empty Hand Fighting” which was published in 1960 and even today, is considered the definitive textbook on the subject of Traditional Karate. It is believed to be the best-selling karate textbook in history.

He was undoubtedly the man on whose shoulders, for many years, carried the responsibility for passing Traditional Karate to the next generations. He believed there was always more to learn and more to improve and he lived his life in the continuous search of that knowledge and development.

The 3rd Traditional Karate European Children’s Cup

The 3rd Traditional Karate European Children’s Cup
19th October, England

The 3rd Traditional Karate European Children’s Cup is now history. The competition took place on 19th Oct. in the main sports hall at Bushfield Leisure Centre in Peterborough, UK. We had a chance to watch efforts of over 200 young Traditional Karate athletes from 7 countries (UK, Poland, Czech Republic, Armenia, Lithuania, Russia and Latvia).

The grand, official opening was delivered by the Mayor of the City of Peterborough, Madam June Stokes – the Honorary Patron of the event – who passed on her appreciation to Traditional Karate Academy Boston for organizing an event of such high standards. Words of appreciation also came from Vice-Consul, Grzegorz Sala who spoke on behalf of the Ambassador of the Polish Republic, Mr. Witold Sobkow. The effort and passion were also noticed and acknowledged by the Mayor of Boston, Mr. Paul Kenny who, inspired by the tournament and volume of action undertaken by the Boston Academy declared his personal engagement into propagating Traditional Karate.

Another person who could not have been missed among the guests was sensei Wlodzimierz Kwiecinski 7 Dan, a/a ITKF Chairman, the mentor or numerous karate athletes in the world. It was him  emphasize that any competition in Traditional Karate is only an integral part of training whose aim is not only becoming better and better on the tatami, but consequently, through those virtues of character shaped by restless effort in Dojo, in the life itself.

The main referee was sensei Nelson Carrion 6 Dan, who commented upon a very high level of technical preparation of the young athletes.
There was a special event that drew enormous attention from all the spectators, namely a special demonstration presented by World Champions, sensei Daniel Iwanek (3 Dan) and sensei Pawel Janusz (3 Dan).

There were a lot of great emotions and huge applause coming from all the enthusiasts of the beautiful art of Traditional Karate. The strongest representation came from Poland and this is the Poles who won the most medals proving for the next time their belonging to the best in Europe and also in the world.

The 7th Traditional Karate World Cup 2013 took place on 15 June 2013 in the Sport Hall GLOBUS  in Lublin (Poland). The 2013 World Cup was combined with a tournament for young traditional karate athletes – Traditional Karate Polish Children’s Cup.

We still feel deep grief after his sudden and unexpected passing and we cannot accept that he is no longer with us especially in view of the forthcoming World Cup. He has participated in all previous editions of the World Cup since 2001 and he was supposed to participate with the Romanian athletes in 2013 edition, too.

In the Word Cup scompetitions are set by the individual cup system. 8 players and 8 female players start in the technical events (kitei, kata) and in close combat – they must demonstrate a comprehensive technical preparation. European Cup competitions are held every two years.
